Australian publication HorrorScope has reviewed Aegri Somnia.

They have this to say about my story, "All Becomes as Wormwood":

All becomes as Wormwood will certainly make a lot of techno-phobes and environmentalists out there squirm in their respective reading chairs. It’s authored by Angeline Hawkes, who purveys the wasteland that is Chernobyl years after the meltdown and reports what she sees. Alex has permission to travel to the abandoned city to add some verisimilitude for a school report and perhaps take a few photographs. Alex discovers (after his motorcycle breaks down, of course), that Chernobyl isn’t as deserted as the world thinks and it seems the city has one last, horrifying gift for the world. Sounds great, and it is … except there is an element of disbelief for the reader as Alex comes to terms with the new environment astonishingly quickly. We’re thrust forward into B grade territory as though we’ve been there all along – and you might find yourself frowning. However, it is a short story, and Angeline is to be forgiven.

I'll own up to that...but working within the timeframe/word count, sometimes something has to give a little...and it was intended to have that B-movie feel to it, was aiming for that Romero-esque hell breaking loose kind of ending. I hope I achieved that for the readers.

HWA members can get a free pdf of the anthology, or email me for the pdf of All Becomes as Wormwood.

In other news: the packing of the house has begun...should be finished in a month or so....I'm pretty quick at this packing thing having moved almost every year of my life until about age 21...then a few times more after that...boxes send me into some sort of jerking, twitching spasm that reeks of doom and instability...but this time I'm staying put!

Finished tying the queen-sized quilt. Today I sew the edges and put that baby on the bed! Yay! Onto the boy crib quilt. I also have to sew together the cut out top for the baby girl quilt. Yay. Oh, and I won some beautiful pink w/ballerinas fabric off ebay to make a sundress and top/ruffled short set for Kiddo #2 for summer. What happened to fabric prices on ebay? Sheesh...I used to be able to get great yardage for little moolah...but I think I'm going to be scouring Walmart soon...I only need 3 yards for each dress/outfit, and it seems sellers on ebay only have 1 yd auctions [for quilters] or you have to pay out the wazooh for the yardage you need...add shipping/handling and ebay fabric shopping is no longer a sewer's paradise unless you're looking for heavy drapery/upolstery fabric.  Oops, sorry for the domestic/sewing rant, lol. Just spilled out there. ha!

I still haven't edited the other story...going to do that, I swear! Have worked on the new collection, however. So, some writing work getting done...I keep saying I'm going into hibernation from the writing...does that ever really happen? lol.

Horror World reviewed Apex Publications newest anthology, Aegri Somnia. [$12.95 trade paperback]

Reviewer Joe Kroeger had this to say about my story, "All Becomes As Wormwood":

In All Becomes As Wormwood, Angeline Hawkes revisits the nightmare landscape of the sight of the Chernobyl accident and gives a frightening glimpse of the local residents and their plans for mankind. Perfectly capturing the atmosphere and power that this area holds in the minds of everyone even today, Hawkes writes a story that is sure to live on even beyond the pages of this anthology.

And he said this about the anthology as a whole:

Every story in this anthology stands out as a great work of fiction that each author had poured his or her blood, sweat and tears into its creation. With the outstanding line-up of rich atmospheric tales, Aegri Somnia is an anthology that is sure to capture each and every reader long after the final page is turned. I highly recommend picking up a copy of Aegri Somnia and losing yourself within the nightmares contained within each well imagined page.

You can also find a review of the anthology on Tangent Online. Here's what reviewer Elizabeth Allen had to say about "All Becomes As Wormwood":

Moving to modern events still within most of our memories, Angeline Hawkes sets her story in the ruins of Chernobyl, where photographer Alex discovers radioactive mutants and their plot for the rest of the radiation-free world. Hint: They hope to achieve the results of the title in which “All Becomes as Wormwood.” Can Alex trust one of the mutants to help him save the country? With an exciting mix of mutants, fanatics, and even zombies, “Wormwood” moves briskly toward an ending that comes too soon.

HWA members can receive a copy of my story by emailing me at angelinehawkes@yahoo.com or a free pdf of the anthology by emailing Jason Sizemore  jason@apexdigest.com.
